Jakarta. Two more people have been charged with forcing dozens of children to beg for them in Jakarta's streets, with one of the victims allegedly a 6-month-old baby who was regularly given high doses of sedatives, a police official has said.

Investigators arrested a couple identified only as E.R., 17, and S.M., 18, on Friday (25/03) in South Jakarta, who brought a 6-month-old baby along with them.

"Sedatives were given so that the victim [baby] could remain calm while they were working in the streets," South Jakarta Police Chief Sr. Comr. Wahyu Hadiningrat said on Friday.

The baby, whom investigators said was given clonazepam — prescription medicine to treat anxiety disorders — every two days, has now been taken to Pertamina Hospital in South Jakarta.

Police are investigating whether the parents of the baby are the two suspects, whom they said claimed to be a married couple but failed to show the necessary documents.

Friday's moves came a day after investigators arrested two women identified only as N.H., 43, and I., 35, also in South Jakarta, and brought in 17 children aged between 5 and 6 years old, for protection.

Investigations revealed that one of the suspects is allegedly the mother of some of the children, who were forced to beg daily, from the morning until the afternoon.

If the children did not follow the suspects' orders, they would be beaten and not be given food, police said.

The suspects could get around Rp 200,000 ($15) per day from each child, and used all of the money for themselves to meet their daily needs, while the children were only given food, according to investigations.

Another six adults were arrested on Thursday and are currently being investigated to find out whether they were also involved.

The South Jakarta Police are looking for more suspects in the case along with the South Jakarta Social Affairs Office, which says it will deploy 100 officers.
