Jakarta. A fire truck was stolen out of a fire station in East Jakarta and found abandoned on one of the capital's major street on Sunday (20/03), baffling officials and residents out to enjoy the weekly Car Free Day in the area.
Citizen journalism website Pasangmata.com was the first to report the presence of the fire truck, sitting idly in the middle of Jalan Thamrin near the Sarinah shopping complex in Central Jakarta on Sunday morning. The website reported that not one fire official was in sight, including the driver.
The fire truck sparked the curiosity of hundreds who passed through the street, which is accessible only for pedestrians, joggers and cyclists every Sunday morning.
Police did not even bother to investigate why the fire truck was there or move the vehicle until it was time to reopen the street for normal traffic at noon.
Hours after it was first discovered, East Jakarta Police finally admitted that the fire truck had been reported missing by the Jatinegara fire station but broke down on Jalan Thamrin, probably in the early hours of Sunday before the street was full of people.
East Jakarta Police criminal unit chief Adj. Sr. Comr. Nasriadi told Detik.com that the truck had been abandoned with the key still lodged in the ignition.
“We are still investigating who was behind this. [The station] had nine people on duty that night and not one was aware that the vehicle had been stolen,” he said.
The truck was finally moved with the help of a tow truck.
