Eddy
Agus
Jakarta. The National Police pledged to revamp its procedures in the arrest and detainment of terrorism suspects after a suspect died while in police custody.
National Police spokesman Brig. Gen. Agus Rianto said on Sunday (13/03) that Sriyono, 34, who was arrested in Klaten, Central Java on Tuesday last week, died on Thursday while in the custody of the police's counter-terrorism unit Densus 88.
Agus claimed that Sriyono was involved in a scuffle with Densus 88 officers.
“The suspect died possibly from the injuries sustained after he tried to assault officers,” he said.
Densus 88 chief Sr. Comr. Eddy Hartono separately said Sriyono was arrested after a tip from another terrorism suspect identified as Awang, who was arrested on Monday (07/03).
Awang told officers that he gave Sriyono a pistol for safekeeping.
“I will take responsibility for this incident," Eddy said.
A source inside Densus 88 told Beritasatu that police searched Sriyono's home but found nothing. Sriyono told police that the gun is hidden at another location in neighboring Temanggung district, Yogyakarta, and agreed on Thursday to take them there.
“The suspect [Sriyono] was being cooperative. Which is why we agreed not to handcuff him and escorted by just two officers,” the source said.
However, as police escorted him to Temanggung on Thursday, Sriyono attacked the two officers and a fight ensued. Densus officers, the source said, knocked Sriyono unconscious and he died en route to a local hospital in Yogyakarta.
The body was taken to the Police Hospital in East Jakarta on Friday and Sriyono's family took the body back to his hometown on Saturday for burial on Sunday, police spokesman Agus said, explaining why police withheld notifying the media about this incident.
“We will increase officers' understanding and implementation of our standard operating procedures for escorting a suspect out of prison,” Agus said adding that the Densus 88 officers should have handcuffed the suspect during his time out of prison.
Agus said an internal investigation is ongoing.
"We have not yet reached a conclusion,” he said when asked if the officers would be disciplined.
