Solo. During his speech at Sebelas Maret University, or UNS, in Solo, Central Java, President Joko Widodo on Friday (11/03) reiterated that as Indonesia emerged into the era of global competition, the demands have increased for more productivity, more efficiency, as well as better work ethics.

"From seconds to seconds, minutes to minutes, we are faced with the competition between nations,” said Joko.

Indonesia’s economic growth, according to Joko, is facing a reality of global partnerships that relies mainly on economic activities, such as trading, and strong dynamics between the states.

Some examples are the establishments of economic blocks, such as the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Economic Community (AEC), Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) – initiated by the United States and pacific nations – and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), established by China, as well as the integration of European countries’ economies.

As the world's population is expected to reach 12.3 billion people by 2043, and nations will compete to acquire two sectors: food and energy, Joko said, Indonesia should prepare a long-term global economic strategy and take advantage of its abundant domestic resources.

Such a plan may be applied in Indonesian regions, for example by using 4.2 million hectares of land in Merauke, Papua, as well as various resources of new and renewable energy in Indonesia, like wind, palm oil, water, solar and geothermal energy.

“If the 4.2 million hectares of land in Merauke is planted by rice, it will surpass our national production on one harvest,” said Joko.

In the educational sector, the president specifically urged Indonesian universities to continue their research in strengthening the nation’s innovations and competitiveness, such as competitive researches on public and market demands, as well as thematic researches for industries.

“I appreciate universities that generalize their researches on the downstream sector of agribusiness, health and pharmacy, manufacture and information technology engineering, new and renewable energy, as well as in the fields of art, tradition and culture,” Joko said.
