Samarinda, East Kalimantan. A fire in the densely-populated Jalan Slamet Riyadi area of Samarinda, East Kalimantan, on Thursday (10/03) night has left over 2,000 residents homeless.
The fire began at 7 p.m. and quickly destroyed many of the wooden houses in the area, Samarinda Disaster Mitigation Agency official Nanang Arifin said.
Between 300 and 400 houses have been affected, with the 712 families displaced, Nanang said at the scene, as reported by local news agency Koran Kaltim. A small mosque and a local kindergarten were also destroyed, he added.
No casualties have been reported.
Residents have been temporarily evacuated to the nearby Darrul Nikmah mosque and Muhammadiyah 2 Junior High School, he said.
The fire was extinguished by 11:30 p.m. after 29 fire trucks attended. Exact losses remain unclear.
