KPK Law revision likely to crash and burn

The House of Representatives’ plan to revise the 2002 law on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) will likely fail, since President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has said the government opposes the plan.

KPK chairman Taufiequrachman Ruki said after attending a limited Cabinet meeting on Friday that the President was taking a tough stance in opposing the planned revision, which was proof that the President supported corruption eradication.

“The President has stated that he rejects the revision of the KPK Law. To us, the President’s stance is satisfying and ensures there will be no suspicion among us,” he said as quoted by kompas.com.

Also attending the limited Cabinet meeting were Police chief Gen. Badrodin Haiti, Attorney General HM Prasetyo, Home Minister Tjahjo Kumolo and Development Planning Minister Adrinof Chaniago.

During the meeting, the President asked the KPK, the police and the Attorney General’s Office to exploit synergies in the fight against corruption.
