雅加达邮报5月14日电 印尼第四大党民主党在结束了周三的全国代表大会后呼吁全社会成员携起手来,获得更多公众支持以确保民主党在2019年立法选举中获胜。

Democratic Party eyes political success in 2019

Wrapping up its national congress on Wednesday, the Democratic Party, the country’s fourth largest political party, urged all members to work hand in hand to revive public support to help the party secure victory in the 2019 legislative election.

Sukawi Sutarip, the leader of the party’s Central Java chapter, said during a speech in the congress’ final plenary session that congress participants had set a target for the next election.

“We are targeting to secure 25 percent of the seats in the legislative bodies,” he said at the congress venue in Surabaya, East Java.

“To achieve the target, [legislative] candidates for the House of Representatives and regional councils must work together to garner votes for the party while at the same time share the campaign costs,” Sukawi said.

The two-day congress earlier reelected incumbent chairman and former president Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono as party leader for the next five years.

Securing only 7.4 percent of the vote in its debut in the 2004 legislative election, the Democratic Party managed to pave the way for Yudhoyono, the party’s then chief patron, to win the country’s first direct presidential election in the same year. Five years later, the party won the legislative election after securing 20.1 percent of the vote and helped Yudhoyono secure a landslide victory for his reelection.

The party, however, saw its popularity plunge prior to the 2014 legislative election after a number of its members, including then chairman Anas Urbaningrum, then youth and sport minister Andi Mallarangeng and lawmakers Angelina Sondakh and Muhammad Nazaruddin, were named graft suspects.

The Dems ended up securing only 10.2 percent of the vote in 2014 and failed to nominate its own candidate for the subsequent presidential race to replace Yudhoyono, who, according to the Constitution, was not allowed to run for a third consecutive term in office.
